Approximately one week ago, it was revealed that former CIA Director John Brennan's security clearance had been revoked, with credible sources stating that several more former officials may have their credentials repealed in the coming days. This unprecedented move by the Executive Branch surprised many in the intelligence community and sparked questions of legality and the morality of the decision.

This move brings to light some deeper concerns. Historically, high-ranking security officials retain their security clearances even after leaving their positions. These security clearances stay in place for the purpose of advising the successors to their positions. I believe that with the removal of security clearances from those in a position to advise our current leaders, we are leaving our country vulnerable to gaps in knowledge, weakening our national security. The current system in place ensures that experienced officials are assisting the current leadership in the continued effort to strengthen the security of American citizens. I believe that these threats to loss of clearance may also adversely impact the work of current national security officials. If there is constant fear of losing the tools it takes to continue your work, the information presented to the administration may be compromised or softened to appease the receiver. This should greatly concern the American people and is a threat that should not be taken lightly.

This issue is about keeping our country safe, and politics has no place in that. I spent twelve years overseas defending the constitution, serving our country with information that was provided by intelligence agencies led by servant-leaders like Mr. Brennan. The removal of his clearance, and the threat of removal from other officials, puts the people of my district in Central Jersey at risk, as well putting the entire country in jeopardy. In the Navy, I never served a political party, I served the Constitution and defended this democracy. We need to start putting people over politics and keep America safe.
